The Importance of Yoga Nidra – Deep Rest for the Body, Mind & Soul
In our constantly “switched on” world, rest is often overlooked - but it’s never been more essential. Enter Yoga Nidra: a profoundly restorative practice that offers healing far beyond what sleep alone can provide.
Also known as yogic sleep, Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation practice that invites the body into deep rest while keeping the mind awake and aware. At Oshun Yoga, we see it as one of the most powerful tools for nervous system regulation, emotional healing, and spiritual reconnection.
What Is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra takes you to the space between wakefulness and sleep - a liminal zone where the body is completely relaxed, and the subconscious mind is open and receptive.
During the practice, you’re guided through breath awareness, body scans, and visualisations while lying comfortably in savasana. The result? A sense of deep calm, clarity, and inner spaciousness.
Why Is It So Powerful?
In just 30-45 minutes, Yoga Nidra can offer the rest equivalent of 3-4 hours of deep sleep. But beyond physical rest, it also supports:
- Nervous System Regulation: Helps move the body out of fight-or-flight and into rest-and-digest mode
- Improved Sleep: Especially helpful for those with insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns
- Emotional Release: Offers a safe container for processing unresolved emotions or tension
- Access to the Subconscious: Ideal for setting intentions (sankalpa) and creating positive inner shifts
- Spiritual Connection: Cultivates stillness and presence, opening pathways to deeper self-awareness
Who Is It For?
Everyone. Whether you're navigating stress, recovering from burnout, seeking spiritual reconnection, or just needing some quiet time to recharge - Yoga Nidra meets you where you are.
It’s also ideal for:
Busy minds that struggle with traditional meditation
Tired bodies in need of deep rest
Anyone in recovery - physical, mental, or emotional
